Role overview

Open recruitment for crewing agencies and shipowners we work with. This page is not a single vacancy: apply to be considered for Second Engineer posts on LNG and LPG carriers when they open.

The second engineer on a gas carrier runs the engine room maintenance on plants that burn gas as well as liquid fuel. On dual-fuel engines this includes gas admission valves, pilot fuel systems and double-walled gas piping with its ventilation and gas detection. On LPG carriers the second engineer also maintains the cargo compressors of the reliquefaction plant with the cargo engineer where the ship carries one. Work on gas systems needs gas freeing and strict permits, so planning is longer than on oil-fuelled ships.

Certificates for Second Engineer posts on LNG and LPG carriers

  • Certificate of Competency as Second Engineer Officer (STCW Reg. III/2)
  • Advanced training for liquefied gas tanker cargo operations (STCW Reg. V/1-2), required for second engineers on gas tankers
  • IGF Code training (STCW Reg. V/3) on gas-fuelled ships
  • High-voltage training on DFDE ships

Watches, trade and contract

Many gas carriers have UMS engine rooms with day work and alarm duty; steam turbine LNG carriers often keep manned watches. Gas operators usually ask second engineers to complete company courses on the ship’s engine and gas systems before joining, and promotion to chief engineer follows company assessment. On steam turbine ships the second engineer also looks after the boilers, feed water treatment and the turbine auxiliaries.

Contract length: commonly 3 to 4 months, set by the employer for each vacancy.

What employers ask for

  • Second engineer service, or third engineer with the gas endorsements, on gas carriers
  • Experience on the same engine or plant type
  • Experience working on gas fuel systems under permits
  • Willingness to follow long company training programmes
