Role overview
Open recruitment for crewing agencies and shipowners we work with. This page is not a single vacancy: apply to be considered for Second Engineer posts on bulk carriers when they open.
The second engineer on a bulk carrier plans and leads the hands-on work in the engine room: main engine unit overhauls (piston, liner and exhaust valve work), generator decarbonising, purifier and pump maintenance, and the ballast pumps and valves that are used heavily in every port. Bulk carriers spend long periods at anchor waiting for a berth, and much of the heavy maintenance is done then, with the chief engineer’s approval and the master’s permission to immobilise the engine.
Certificates for Second Engineer posts on bulk carriers
- Certificate of Competency as Second Engineer Officer (STCW Reg. III/2 or III/3)
- Advanced fire fighting (STCW Reg. VI/3), medical first aid (VI/4), designated security duties (VI/6)
- High-voltage training only where the ship has HV systems (most bulk carriers run at 440 V)
- Flag endorsement (STCW Reg. I/10)
Watches, trade and contract
Most bulk carriers have UMS engine rooms, so the second engineer works days and shares alarm duty with the third and fourth engineers. On geared ships the engine department maintains crane hydraulics, slewing gear and wires together with the deck crew. Grab work in port can cause breakdowns of cranes that must be fixed quickly to avoid off-hire.
Contract length: commonly 5 to 6 months, set by the employer for each vacancy.
What employers ask for
- Previous contracts as second engineer, or third engineer with overhaul experience, on bulk carriers
- Main engine overhaul experience on the engine maker fitted
- Experience with deck crane hydraulics on geared ships
- Good planned maintenance and spare parts records
