Role overview
Open recruitment for crewing agencies and shipowners we work with. This page is not a single vacancy: apply to be considered for Master posts on LNG and LPG carriers when they open.
Gas carriers carry liquefied natural gas (LNG) at about -162 °C, or liquefied petroleum gases such as propane and butane, and often ammonia or other chemical gases on LPG carriers. Gas operators are among the most selective employers at sea: masters usually come from the company’s own senior officers, and charterers and terminals check experience closely. The master is responsible for safe cargo operations under the IGC Code, the terminal compatibility process and, on some ships, ship-to-ship transfers of gas.
Certificates for Master posts on LNG and LPG carriers
- Certificate of Competency as Master (STCW Reg. II/2)
- Advanced training for liquefied gas tanker cargo operations (STCW Reg. V/1-2)
- IGF Code advanced training (STCW Reg. V/3) where the ship uses gas or another low-flashpoint fuel, which is normal on LNG carriers
- Ship Security Officer (STCW Reg. VI/5), medical care (VI/4), flag endorsements (I/10)
Watches, trade and contract
The master does not keep a watch but leads cargo planning with the chief officer, emergency shutdown (ESD) tests with the terminal, and the cool-down, gassing-up and warm-up operations around dry docks. On LNG carriers the boil-off gas is normally used as fuel, so cargo planning and the voyage speed affect each other. Gas carriers trade to a limited number of terminals, each with its own approval and vetting requirements.
Contract length: commonly 3 to 4 months, set by the employer for each vacancy.
What employers ask for
- Senior officer experience on the same cargo containment type (membrane, Moss or Type C tanks)
- Time in rank on gas carriers counted under the charterers’ officer experience matrix
- STS experience where the ship does STS
- Excellent vetting history; many operators also require SIGTTO-based company training
