Role overview
Open recruitment for crewing agencies and shipowners we work with. This page is not a single vacancy: apply to be considered for Second Engineer posts on container ships when they open.
On a container ship the second engineer has to plan overhauls into very short windows. Main engine work that needs the engine stopped is planned for port stays agreed with the chief engineer and the operator, and generator work is timed so that enough power remains for reefers and cargo cranes on ships that have them. Units on large-bore engines are heavy, so overhauls need good preparation of lifting gear, spares and tools before the ship arrives.
Certificates for Second Engineer posts on container ships
- Certificate of Competency as Second Engineer Officer (STCW Reg. III/2)
- High-voltage training where the ship has HV systems
- Advanced fire fighting (STCW Reg. VI/3), designated security duties (VI/6), flag endorsement (I/10)
- IGF Code training (STCW Reg. V/3) on gas- or methanol-fuelled ships
Watches, trade and contract
Most container ships have UMS engine rooms, so the second engineer works days and shares alarm duty. Before an emission control area the engineers carry out the fuel changeover and record the time, position and tank volumes, which port state control checks. Purifiers, fuel treatment and cylinder oil feed are watched closely at low engine loads during slow steaming. On ships with scrubbers the engine department also maintains the scrubber pumps, nozzles and washwater monitoring equipment.
Contract length: commonly 4 to 5 months, set by the employer for each vacancy.
What employers ask for
- Previous contracts as second engineer, or as third engineer with overhaul experience, on container ships
- Experience of large two-stroke engines from the same maker
- Fuel changeover and fuel treatment experience
