Role overview

Open recruitment for crewing agencies and shipowners we work with. This page is not a single vacancy: apply to be considered for Chief Officer posts on LNG and LPG carriers when they open.

The chief officer on a gas carrier is the cargo officer. On an LNG carrier that means the cargo compressors, vaporisers and boil-off handling, tank pressure control, the custody transfer measurement system that decides the value of the cargo, and cool-down of the tanks before loading. On LPG carriers it can also mean reliquefaction plant operation, cargo heating for discharge to pressurised storage, and changes between grades such as propane, butane, ammonia or vinyl chloride monomer, each with its own rules in the IGC Code.

Certificates for Chief Officer posts on LNG and LPG carriers

  • Certificate of Competency as Chief Mate (STCW Reg. II/2)
  • Basic and advanced training for liquefied gas tanker cargo operations (STCW Reg. V/1-2)
  • For the advanced endorsement: at least 3 months of approved seagoing service on liquefied gas tankers, or 1 month of approved on-board training as supernumerary with at least 3 loading and 3 unloading operations
  • IGF Code training (STCW Reg. V/3) on ships that burn gas as fuel

Watches, trade and contract

At sea the chief officer often keeps the 4 to 8 watch and handles cargo tank pressure and temperature management. Before dry dock the cargo tanks are warmed up, inerted and aerated, then after dry dock dried, inerted, gassed up and cooled down: these operations are planned by the chief officer and take several days.

Contract length: commonly 3 to 4 months, set by the employer for each vacancy.

What employers ask for

  • Previous chief officer or senior second officer experience on the same gas carrier type
  • Hands-on cargo machinery experience (compressors, reliquefaction, vaporisers)
  • Experience of gas trials, cool-down and gassing-up
  • Strong vetting and terminal records
