Role overview

Open recruitment for crewing agencies and shipowners we work with. This page is not a single vacancy: apply to be considered for Chief Engineer posts on LNG and LPG carriers when they open.

LNG carriers have the most varied propulsion plants in shipping. Older ships use steam turbines with boilers that burn boil-off gas; many ships built from the mid-2000s use dual-fuel diesel-electric plants (DFDE or TFDE); and most newer ships use two-stroke gas engines such as the MAN ME-GI or WinGD X-DF. A chief engineer is usually hired for the plant type he or she knows. LPG carriers are mostly conventional motor ships, with reliquefaction compressors that the engine department maintains.

Certificates for Chief Engineer posts on LNG and LPG carriers

  • Certificate of Competency as Chief Engineer Officer (STCW Reg. III/2)
  • Advanced training for liquefied gas tanker cargo operations (STCW Reg. V/1-2)
  • IGF Code advanced training (STCW Reg. V/3) for ships using gas as fuel
  • High-voltage training: DFDE ships have high-voltage generators and electric propulsion motors
  • A steam certificate or steam endorsement where the flag requires it for steam turbine ships

Watches, trade and contract

The chief engineer works days and leads the engine side of gas fuel operations: gas valve unit checks, fuel gas supply systems, the gas combustion unit for excess boil-off, and the safety systems required by the IGF Code. Gas operators run detailed company training and assessments before promotion, and many keep their chief engineers on fixed rotations with the same fleet.

Contract length: commonly 3 to 4 months, set by the employer for each vacancy.

What employers ask for

  • Time in rank on the same propulsion type (steam, DFDE/TFDE, ME-GI, X-DF)
  • Gas tanker and IGF endorsements already issued
  • High-voltage and electric propulsion experience for DFDE ships
  • Excellent vetting, audit and maintenance records
