Role overview

Open recruitment for crewing agencies and shipowners we work with. This page is not a single vacancy: apply to be considered for Chief Officer posts on offshore vessels when they open.

On offshore vessels the chief officer is usually a senior DP operator (SDPO) and keeps DP watches at the installation, often 6 or 12 hours at a time. On a PSV the chief officer plans deck cargo (containers, pipes, baskets) and the bulk cargoes carried below deck: fuel, water, drilling mud, brine and dry bulk such as cement and barite, transferred by hose to the installation. On AHTS vessels the chief officer runs the deck during anchor handling and towing.

Certificates for Chief Officer posts on offshore vessels

  • Certificate of Competency as Chief Mate (STCW Reg. II/2), or II/3 near-coastal where allowed
  • Nautical Institute DP Operator certificate (Limited or Unlimited depending on the vessel), with the DP logbook
  • OPITO BOSIET or FOET with CA-EBS, including HUET
  • GMDSS (STCW Reg. IV/2), medical care (VI/4), designated security duties (VI/6)

Watches, trade and contract

Watches on offshore vessels are commonly 12 hours on and 12 off, especially on vessels with two DP operators per watch on DP2 operations. Deck cargo and bulk transfers follow the installation’s procedures and the vessel’s own risk assessments; lifting operations are coordinated with the crane operator on the installation by radio.

Contract length: commonly equal-time rotations, for example 4 to 6 weeks on and off, set by the employer for each vacancy.

What employers ask for

  • DP hours logged on DP2 or DP3 vessels
  • Experience on the vessel type: PSV bulk transfers or AHTS anchor handling
  • Offshore survival training valid for the region
  • Experience of the oil and gas or wind operator’s permit and toolbox talk systems
