Role overview
Open recruitment for crewing agencies and shipowners we work with. This page is not a single vacancy: apply to be considered for Chief Engineer posts on offshore vessels when they open.
Offshore vessels often have diesel-electric plants with several generators, azimuth thrusters, tunnel thrusters and controllable-pitch propellers, all serving the DP system. The chief engineer is responsible for the redundancy that the DP class depends on: on DP2 and DP3 vessels a single failure must not cause loss of position. That means keeping the vessel’s FMEA (failure modes and effects analysis) valid, taking part in annual DP trials, and running the engine room so that the power and thruster set-up matches the DP operation.
Certificates for Chief Engineer posts on offshore vessels
- Certificate of Competency as Chief Engineer Officer (STCW Reg. III/2 or III/3, depending on propulsion power)
- High-voltage training: many offshore vessels have HV diesel-electric plants
- OPITO BOSIET or FOET with CA-EBS, including HUET
- DP awareness or DP maintenance courses are often asked
Watches, trade and contract
Offshore chief engineers commonly work equal-time rotations with a back-to-back colleague. Engine-room watch systems depend on the vessel and the operation; many offshore vessels keep a manned engine room or an engineer on duty during DP work. Fuel and water are also cargo on PSVs, so the engine department helps with the bulk transfer systems. Before each DP operation the engine room completes its part of the DP checklist, for example the generator and thruster set-up agreed for that operation.
Contract length: commonly equal-time rotations, for example 4 to 6 weeks on and off, set by the employer for each vacancy.
What employers ask for
