Role overview
Open recruitment for crewing agencies and shipowners we work with. This page is not a single vacancy: apply to be considered for Able Seaman posts on offshore vessels when they open.
On an offshore vessel the AB is part of the deck crew that handles cargo on an open deck at sea. On a PSV that means securing containers and pipes, slinging loads for the installation crane and connecting bulk hoses. On an AHTS it means anchor handling and towing work at the stern roller: chasers, shackles, wires and chain, with the deck crew working near moving wires under strict safe zones. The deck is often wet and moving, so offshore employers put a high value on safe-working records.
Certificates for Able Seaman posts on offshore vessels
- Rating Forming Part of a Navigational Watch (STCW Reg. II/4) and Able Seafarer Deck (STCW Reg. II/5)
- OPITO BOSIET or FOET with CA-EBS, including HUET
- Banksman/slinger and rigging training; GWO Basic Safety Training on wind farm vessels
- Basic Training (STCW Reg. VI/1), survival craft (VI/2), security awareness (VI/6)
Watches, trade and contract
Deck crew on offshore vessels commonly work 12 hours on and 12 off during the trip. ABs also take helm and lookout watches during transit to the field. Rotations are usually equal time and are set by the employer. Before every lift or anchor-handling job the crew holds a toolbox talk on the risks, and any crew member can stop the job if it becomes unsafe.
Contract length: commonly equal-time rotations, for example 4 to 6 weeks on and off, set by the employer for each vacancy.
