Role overview

Open recruitment for crewing agencies and shipowners we work with. This page is not a single vacancy: apply to be considered for Master posts on offshore vessels when they open.

Masters on offshore vessels command platform supply vessels (PSV), anchor handling tug supply vessels (AHTS), construction, dive support and wind farm vessels. Much of the work is done close to installations under dynamic positioning (DP), inside the 500 m safety zone, where the master works with the installation’s control room and follows the operator’s and IMCA guidance. Offshore masters usually also hold DP certificates and stand DP watches themselves on smaller vessels.

Certificates for Master posts on offshore vessels

  • Certificate of Competency as Master (STCW Reg. II/2), or II/3 (near-coastal) on smaller vessels where the flag and trade allow
  • Nautical Institute DP Operator certificate (Unlimited is asked for on DP2 and DP3 vessels), earned through the DP Induction and DP Simulator courses and logged DP sea time
  • OPITO BOSIET (or FOET refresher) with CA-EBS, which includes helicopter underwater escape training (HUET)
  • Anchor handling simulator training for AHTS masters; GWO Basic Safety Training for offshore wind

Watches, trade and contract

Offshore masters often work equal-time rotations: the same time on board and at home, with a back-to-back master on the other rotation. The rotation length is set by the employer and region. DP operations follow the vessel’s DP operations manual and activity-specific operating guidelines; the DP equipment classes 1, 2 and 3 are defined in IMO MSC.1/Circ.1580 and earlier MSC/Circ.645.

Contract length: commonly equal-time rotations, for example 4 to 6 weeks on and off, set by the employer for each vacancy.

What employers ask for

  • DP master experience on the same vessel type (PSV, AHTS, construction, wind)
  • DPO Unlimited certificate and a DP logbook with recent hours
  • Experience in the region and with the oil and gas or wind farm operator’s rules
  • Valid offshore survival training and offshore medical where the region requires it
