Role overview
Open recruitment for crewing agencies and shipowners we work with. This page is not a single vacancy: apply to be considered for Chief Officer posts on bulk carriers when they open.
The chief officer on a bulk carrier plans the cargo and ballast so that drafts, stability and hull stresses stay within limits during loading and discharge. Large ore and coal terminals load several thousand tonnes per hour, so the plan must match the deballasting rate pour by pour. The chief officer also carries out the initial and final draft surveys with the surveyor, prepares the holds for inspection, and keeps the hatch covers weathertight.
Certificates for Chief Officer posts on bulk carriers
- Certificate of Competency as Chief Mate (STCW Reg. II/2)
- Medical care on board (STCW Reg. VI/4), advanced fire fighting (VI/3), designated security duties (VI/6)
- Working knowledge of the IMSBC Code, the International Grain Code, the BLU Code and SOLAS Chapter XII (additional safety measures for bulk carriers)
- Flag endorsement (STCW Reg. I/10) for the ship’s flag
Watches, trade and contract
At sea the chief officer usually keeps the 4 to 8 watch and runs deck maintenance in the day. Between cargoes the holds are cleaned to the next charterer’s standard, for example “grain clean” after coal, which can mean washing, scaling and painting by the crew in a few days. Before grain or other wet-sensitive cargo many owners test the hatch covers with hoses or ultrasonic equipment.
Contract length: commonly 4 to 6 months, set by the employer for each vacancy.
What employers ask for
- Previous contracts as chief officer, or as second officer with cargo planning, on bulk carriers of the same size
- Draft survey and loading computer experience, including grain stability
- Hold cleaning and hatch cover maintenance records that passed inspections
- Experience of geared operations (cranes and grabs) if the ship is geared
