Role overview

Open recruitment for crewing agencies and shipowners we work with. This page is not a single vacancy: apply to be considered for Third Officer posts on bulk carriers when they open.

Bulk carriers are the most common ship type for a first contract as third officer, because the fleet is large and many owners run cadet programmes on dry bulk. The third officer looks after the life-saving and fire-fighting appliances, including the free-fall lifeboat fitted on many newer bulk carriers, keeps navigational watches and shares the port watches during cargo work. Bulk carriers also have water ingress alarms in the cargo holds (SOLAS Reg. XII/12), which are tested as part of the safety routine.

Certificates for Third Officer posts on bulk carriers

  • Certificate of Competency as Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch (STCW Reg. II/1)
  • GMDSS General Operator’s Certificate (STCW Reg. IV/2) and ECDIS
  • Basic Training (VI/1), survival craft and rescue boats (VI/2), advanced fire fighting (VI/3), medical first aid (VI/4), designated security duties (VI/6)
  • Flag endorsement (STCW Reg. I/10)

Watches, trade and contract

At sea the third officer usually keeps the 8 to 12 watch. In port the deck watch checks drafts, moorings and the hatch covers being opened and closed, and records times of cargo work and stoppages, which matter for the laytime calculation. Hold inspections, sounding of bilges and ballast tanks and the monthly safety equipment checks are part of the routine.

Contract length: commonly 5 to 6 months, set by the employer for each vacancy.

What employers ask for

  • Completed cadetship with a training record book, ideally on bulk carriers
  • CoC, GMDSS and ECDIS certificates with flag endorsement
  • Clear records for life-saving and fire-fighting equipment
  • Good English for VHF communication with pilots and port control
