Role overview

Open recruitment for crewing agencies and shipowners we work with. This page is not a single vacancy: apply to be considered for Cook posts on bulk carriers when they open.

The cook on a bulk carrier usually runs the galley alone or with one messman, cooking three meals a day for a crew of about 18 to 25. Tramp voyages can last weeks and the next port may have poor supplies, so the cook plans menus and stores for the whole voyage with the master and keeps the cold rooms and dry stores in order. Crews are often of two or more nationalities, so menus must cover different diets and religious needs.

Certificates for Cook posts on bulk carriers

  • Ship’s cook qualification under MLC 2006 (Regulation 3.2, Standard A3.2): a ship’s cook must be trained and qualified, and must be at least 18 years old
  • Basic Training (STCW Reg. VI/1) and security awareness (VI/6)
  • Seafarer medical certificate (STCW Reg. I/9, MLC Reg. 1.2) and seaman’s book
  • Food hygiene training; some companies ask for a HACCP course

Watches, trade and contract

The cook works day hours, typically from early morning to after the evening meal with a break. Galley hygiene, food storage temperatures and garbage handling under MARPOL Annex V (food waste only discharged at the allowed distance from land) are checked by the master and by port state control, which also inspects food and water under MLC 2006.

Contract length: commonly 6 to 9 months, set by the employer for each vacancy.

What employers ask for

  • Previous contracts as cook on cargo ships
  • Budget and provisioning experience (owners often set a daily victualling rate)
  • Experience cooking for mixed-nationality crews
  • Clean hygiene inspection records
