Role overview
Open recruitment for crewing agencies and shipowners we work with. This page is not a single vacancy: apply to be considered for ETO posts on LNG and LPG carriers when they open.
On LNG carriers with dual-fuel diesel-electric plants the ETO looks after high-voltage generators, switchboards, transformers and the frequency converters that drive the propulsion motors. On all gas carriers the ETO also supports the cargo control system: tank level and temperature gauges, the custody transfer measurement system, the emergency shutdown (ESD) links with the terminal, and the fixed gas detection system. Faults in these systems can stop cargo operations, so gas operators look for ETOs with automation experience.
Certificates for ETO posts on LNG and LPG carriers
- Certificate of Competency as Electro-Technical Officer (STCW Reg. III/6)
- Basic training for liquefied gas tanker cargo operations (STCW Reg. V/1-2)
- High-voltage training (over 1,000 V) and safe isolation procedures
- IGF Code basic training (STCW Reg. V/3) on gas-fuelled ships
Watches, trade and contract
The ETO works day hours and is on call. Before arrival at a terminal the ESD system is tested with the ship’s cargo team, and the ship-shore link (electric, fibre-optic or pneumatic) must match the terminal. Instrument calibration and gas detector checks are part of the planned maintenance system and are reviewed in vetting inspections. Work on electrical equipment in gas-dangerous zones must respect the certified safe (Ex) type of the equipment, so ETOs need training in hazardous area equipment.
Contract length: commonly 3 to 4 months, set by the employer for each vacancy.
What employers ask for
- ETO service on gas carriers, or on other ships with HV electric propulsion
- Experience with cargo control and alarm systems from the makers fitted
- High-voltage switching experience
- Gas tanker basic training already issued
