Oil and Chemical Tanker Jobs

Tankers carry crude oil, refined products (petrol, diesel, jet fuel), chemicals and vegetable oils in bulk. Crude carriers range up to VLCCs; product and chemical tankers are smaller, with many segregated tanks, coated or stainless steel. Tanker work pays attention to cargo safety, pollution prevention and inspections by oil majors.

Work on board

  • Cargo, ballast and tank-cleaning operations, inert gas systems and crude oil washing on crude carriers
  • Chemical tankers carry products under the IBC Code; officers work with cargo compatibility and tank cleaning tables
  • Oil majors inspect tankers through the OCIMF SIRE vetting programme; companies check officers’ tanker experience before hiring
  • Strict permit-to-work, enclosed space entry and gas testing routines

Certificates and training

  • Basic training for oil and chemical tanker cargo operations (STCW Reg. V/1-1): officers and ratings with cargo duties
  • Advanced training for oil tanker cargo operations or chemical tanker cargo operations (STCW Reg. V/1-1): master, chief officer, chief engineer, second engineer and any person with immediate responsibility for cargo operations
  • Normal certificates of competency for each rank (STCW Chapters II and III)

What to put in your CV

Tanker type (crude, product, chemical), ship size, cargoes handled, your tanker endorsements with expiry dates, and the number of months on tankers in your rank. Oil majors and charterers look at this time in rank.
