Seafarers Recruitment
Seafarer Jobs by Ship Type
Each type of ship needs different experience and, for some ships, extra STCW training. Tankers and gas carriers need the tanker endorsements of STCW Chapter V, passenger ships need crowd and crisis management training, and offshore vessels often need dynamic positioning (DP) certificates. Choose a ship type to see which ranks are on board and what employers ask for.
- Bulk carriers: Bulk carriers carry dry cargo in bulk such as iron ore, coal, grain, bauxite, fertiliser and cement.
- Oil and chemical tankers: Tankers carry crude oil, refined products (petrol, diesel, jet fuel), chemicals and vegetable oils in bulk.
- Container ships: Container ships carry cargo in standard containers, from small feeder ships to ships of more than 20,000 TEU on liner routes.
- LNG and LPG carriers: Gas carriers carry liquefied gases: LNG (liquefied natural gas, carried at about minus 162 °C) and LPG (propane and butane, carried pressurised, semi-refrigerated or fully refrigerated).
- Offshore vessels: The offshore sector includes drilling units, FPSOs (floating production, storage and offloading units), construction and diving support vessels, cable and pipe layers and wind farm vessels.
- Passenger ships and ferries: Passenger ships include cruise ships, ro-ro passenger ferries and smaller passenger vessels.
- Yachts: Yachts used commercially (for charter) and large private yachts carry professional crews: captain, officers, deckhands, engineers, chef and interior crew (stewards and stewardesses).
- General cargo and multipurpose ships: General cargo and multipurpose ships carry break-bulk cargo such as steel, timber, bagged cargo and project cargo, and often containers too.
- Tugs and offshore supply vessels: Tugs assist ships in port, tow barges and floating structures, and on the open sea carry out ocean towage.
