Role overview

Open recruitment for crewing agencies and shipowners we work with. This page is not a single vacancy: apply to be considered for Master posts on oil and chemical tankers when they open.

A master on an oil, product or chemical tanker has the same command duties as on any ship, plus the pollution and fire risk of the cargo. Oil majors, charterers and terminals judge the ship through the master: SIRE 2.0 vetting inspections, terminal acceptance, ship-to-ship (STS) transfers and port state control on tankers all look at how the master runs cargo work, mooring and emergency response. Product and chemical tankers trade on regional routes with frequent port calls and many grades of cargo; crude carriers make long ocean voyages between a few large terminals.

Certificates for Master posts on oil and chemical tankers

  • Certificate of Competency as Master (STCW Reg. II/2), normally for ships of 3,000 GT or more
  • Advanced training for oil tanker cargo operations and/or advanced training for chemical tanker cargo operations (STCW Reg. V/1-1), matching the ship type
  • Ship Security Officer (STCW Reg. VI/5) and medical care on board (STCW Reg. VI/4)
  • Flag endorsements (STCW Reg. I/10) for the CoC and for the tanker endorsement when the flag differs from the issuing country
  • Company courses often asked by tanker operators: ship handling, bridge resource management, STS operations and incident command

Watches, trade and contract

On a tanker with three watchkeeping officers the master does not normally keep a watch. The work is planning, approval and leadership: the cargo and ballast plan prepared with the chief officer, the STS plan, mooring plans that meet the terminal and OCIMF mooring guidelines, and drills for the Shipboard Oil Pollution Emergency Plan (SOPEP, or SMPEP on chemical tankers). The master is on the bridge for pilotage, berthing and STS approaches, and signs the cargo documents and the Oil Record Book entries.

Contract length: commonly 3 to 5 months, set by the employer for each vacancy.

What employers ask for

  • Time in rank on the same tanker type (crude, product or chemical); many charterers count it with an officer experience matrix
  • Recent vetting history with few observations, and experience of SIRE 2.0 inspections
  • STS experience as master, and knowledge of the terminals in the ship’s trade
  • References from previous tanker operators; some ask for a valid US C1/D visa for US trade
