Seafarers Recruitment
Deck and Engine Cadet Jobs
Cadets are trainee officers who need approved seagoing service to get their first certificate of competency: STCW Reg. II/1 for deck officers and Reg. III/1 for engineer officers. In an approved training programme this is at least 12 months at sea, with the tasks recorded in a training record book signed by the officers on board.
Ranks
- Deck Cadet: The deck cadet is a trainee officer.
- Engine Cadet: The engine cadet is a trainee engineer officer.
Before you apply
- Basic Training (STCW Reg. VI/1) and security awareness (STCW Reg. VI/6)
- Seafarer medical certificate and seaman’s book
- Proof of enrolment from your academy or training programme, and your training record book
- Minimum age for work on board: 16 (MLC 2006, Standard A1.1)
Cadet berths are limited. Put your academy, course year and the sea time you still need in your CV so that employers can match you to the right berth.
What to put in your CV
Your academy and course, the year you are in, how many months of approved sea time you already have and how many you still need, and the ship types you would like to train on. Upload your Basic Training, medical and seaman’s book so that the employer can check them quickly.
After the cadetship
Deck cadets usually start as third officer and engine cadets as fourth engineer once they hold their STCW Reg. II/1 or III/1 certificate.
