Role overview

Open recruitment for crewing agencies and shipowners we work with. This is not a single vacancy with a fixed joining date: apply to be considered for upcoming Engine Cadet vacancies.

What a Engine Cadet does

The engine cadet is a trainee engineer officer. On board the cadet works through an approved training record book under the chief engineer and engineers: engine-room watchkeeping under supervision, maintenance and overhauls, fuel and lube oil systems, purifiers, boilers, generators and the safety equipment of the engine room. The engineers sign the record book and the maritime administration checks it for the certificate.

Certificates required

  • Basic Training (STCW Reg. VI/1): personal survival techniques, fire prevention and fire fighting, elementary first aid, personal safety and social responsibilities
  • Security awareness (STCW Reg. VI/6), or designated security duties if you have security tasks on board
  • Seafarer medical certificate (STCW Reg. I/9 and MLC 2006 Reg. 1.2), valid for a maximum of 2 years
  • Seaman’s book (discharge book) from a flag state
  • Letter or proof of enrolment from your maritime academy or approved training programme, and the training record book

Sea service and promotion

STCW Reg. III/1 requires combined workshop skill training and approved seagoing service of at least 12 months in an approved training programme (or 36 months otherwise, of which 30 months at sea in the engine department), including 6 months of engine-room watchkeeping under supervision. After the certificate, the first job is usually fourth engineer.

Contract length
