Role overview

Open recruitment for crewing agencies and shipowners we work with. This is not a single vacancy with a fixed joining date: apply to be considered for upcoming Deck Cadet vacancies.

What a Deck Cadet does

The deck cadet is a trainee officer. On board the cadet works through the tasks of an approved training record book under the master and officers: bridge watchkeeping under supervision, chartwork and passage planning, cargo work, mooring, maintenance with the deck crew, and safety equipment. The cadet keeps a record of the training, which the officers sign and which the maritime administration checks for the certificate.

Certificates required

  • Basic Training (STCW Reg. VI/1): personal survival techniques, fire prevention and fire fighting, elementary first aid, personal safety and social responsibilities
  • Security awareness (STCW Reg. VI/6), or designated security duties if you have security tasks on board
  • Seafarer medical certificate (STCW Reg. I/9 and MLC 2006 Reg. 1.2), valid for a maximum of 2 years
  • Seaman’s book (discharge book) from a flag state
  • Letter or proof of enrolment from your maritime academy or approved training programme, and the training record book

Sea service and promotion

STCW Reg. II/1 requires at least 12 months of approved seagoing service as part of an approved training programme (or 36 months otherwise), including at least 6 months of bridge watchkeeping under supervision. Cadet berths are limited, so many cadets join through their academy or a sponsoring company. The minimum age for work on board is 16 (MLC 2006, Standard A1.1).

Contract length
