Role overview

Open recruitment for crewing agencies and shipowners we work with. This is not a single vacancy with a fixed joining date: apply to be considered for upcoming Wiper vacancies.

What a Wiper does

The wiper is the entry-level engine rating. The job is mainly keeping the engine room clean and tidy: wiping machinery, cleaning bilges, tank tops and workshop, handling spare parts and stores, and helping engineers, fitters and oilers with maintenance. A wiper learns the engine-room systems and safety routines and prepares for the RFPEW certificate.

Certificates required

  • Basic Training (STCW Reg. VI/1): personal survival techniques, fire prevention and fire fighting, elementary first aid, personal safety and social responsibilities
  • Security awareness (STCW Reg. VI/6), or designated security duties if you have security tasks on board
  • Seafarer medical certificate (STCW Reg. I/9 and MLC 2006 Reg. 1.2), valid for a maximum of 2 years
  • Seaman’s book (discharge book) from a flag state
  • RFPEW (STCW Reg. III/4) once you have the required sea time, if you will keep engineering watches

Sea service and promotion

After the sea service required by STCW Reg. III/4 (at least 6 months of training and experience, or special training with 2 months at sea), a wiper can get RFPEW and work as oiler. The minimum age for work on board is 16 (MLC 2006, Standard A1.1).

Typical ships

Contract length

Commonly 6 to 9 months, set by the employer for each vacancy. MLC 2006 limits continuous service on board to less than 12 months before the seafarer is entitled to repatriation.
