Role overview

Open recruitment for crewing agencies and shipowners we work with. This is not a single vacancy with a fixed joining date: apply to be considered for upcoming Motorman vacancies.

What a Motorman does

The motorman is a skilled engine rating who helps the engineers keep the machinery running: rounds and readings, cleaning and changing filters, purifier cleaning, transfer of fuel and lube oil, and maintenance on pumps, compressors and generators. Job titles differ between companies: some use motorman and oiler for the same rating, others use motorman for a more senior rating holding Able Seafarer Engine.

Certificates required

  • Rating Forming Part of an Engineering Watch, RFPEW (STCW Reg. III/4)
  • Able Seafarer Engine (STCW Reg. III/5), asked for by many employers
  • Basic Training (STCW Reg. VI/1): personal survival techniques, fire prevention and fire fighting, elementary first aid, personal safety and social responsibilities
  • Proficiency in survival craft and rescue boats (STCW Reg. VI/2)
  • Security awareness (STCW Reg. VI/6), or designated security duties if you have security tasks on board
  • Seafarer medical certificate (STCW Reg. I/9 and MLC 2006 Reg. 1.2), valid for a maximum of 2 years
  • Seaman’s book (discharge book) from a flag state

Sea service and promotion

Able Seafarer Engine (STCW Reg. III/5) requires RFPEW plus at least 12 months of seagoing service in the engine department, or 6 months with approved training. From motorman the next steps are fitter or, with enough sea time and training, engineer officer (STCW Reg. III/1).
