Role overview

Open recruitment for crewing agencies and shipowners we work with. This is not a single vacancy with a fixed joining date: apply to be considered for upcoming Oiler vacancies.

What a Oiler does

The oiler is an engine rating who keeps engine-room watches with the engineer officer, makes rounds and records temperatures, pressures and tank levels, checks lubrication of machinery and reports leaks or abnormal conditions. Between watches the oiler cleans purifiers and filters, helps with bunkering and with maintenance work on pumps, compressors and generators.

Certificates required

  • Rating Forming Part of an Engineering Watch, RFPEW (STCW Reg. III/4)
  • Able Seafarer Engine (STCW Reg. III/5), an advantage for senior oiler positions
  • Basic Training (STCW Reg. VI/1): personal survival techniques, fire prevention and fire fighting, elementary first aid, personal safety and social responsibilities
  • Proficiency in survival craft and rescue boats (STCW Reg. VI/2)
  • Security awareness (STCW Reg. VI/6), or designated security duties if you have security tasks on board
  • Seafarer medical certificate (STCW Reg. I/9 and MLC 2006 Reg. 1.2), valid for a maximum of 2 years
  • Seaman’s book (discharge book) from a flag state

Sea service and promotion

RFPEW (STCW Reg. III/4) requires approved seagoing service with at least 6 months of training and experience, or special training with at least 2 months of approved seagoing service. Oilers usually start as wipers. With 12 months of engine service after RFPEW (or 6 months with approved training) they can get Able Seafarer Engine (STCW Reg. III/5).

Contract length
