Egyptian Seafarers: Documents, Recognition and Jobs

Egyptian officers and ratings work on Egyptian-flag ships, on Red Sea and Suez Canal services, offshore in the Gulf of Suez and the Mediterranean, and on foreign-flag ships worldwide. Many Egyptian officers trained at the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT) in Alexandria, one of the largest maritime training institutions in the region.

Certificates and seaman’s book in Egypt

  • Certificates of Competency and proficiency are issued by Egypt’s maritime administration, the Egyptian Authority for Maritime Safety (EAMS). Check the current issuing office and verification procedure with EAMS.
  • The national seaman’s book is issued in Egypt; for the current issuing office and validity, check with the issuing authority.
  • Many Egyptian ratings who work on foreign-flag ships also hold the seaman’s book of the flag state, for example Belize, Liberia or Panama.

STCW status and recognition by foreign flags

Egypt is a Party to the STCW Convention and appears on the IMO list of Parties confirmed as giving full and complete effect to it (the “white list”, IMO circular MSC.1/Circ.1164 and its revisions). Check the latest revision before relying on it.

To serve as an officer on a foreign-flag ship, an Egyptian CoC needs the flag’s endorsement attesting recognition (STCW Reg. I/10). The flag checks the certificate with EAMS before issuing the endorsement, which can take from days to weeks depending on the flag. Each flag keeps its own list of countries whose CoCs it recognises, so check the flag before the contract.

What employers ask Egyptian seafarers for

  • CoC and STCW certificates with clear expiry dates, and the flag endorsement or proof that it has been applied for
  • Sea service records (discharge book entries or company letters) for the rank applied for
  • Valid passport, seaman’s book and seafarer medical certificate (STCW Reg. I/9)
  • English good enough for watchkeeping and safety communication; for some trades a valid US C1/D or Schengen visa

For Egyptian ratings who want to work on foreign-flag ships, a flag-state seaman’s book is often the fastest first step; it is issued on the basis of the STCW certificates the rating already holds.

Endorsements and seaman’s books for foreign flags

Our partner International Ship Registry handles flag endorsements of CoCs (STCW Reg. I/10) and seaman’s books for ratings, for example the Belize seaman’s book, on behalf of seafarers and crewing agencies.
